Event overview

CEDA releases our research report, VET: securing skills for growth, in WA with a keynote address from the Deputy Premier and Minister for Training and Workforce Development, Hon. Liza Harvey MLA, on how the state’s training sector is planning to meet WA’s future workforce trends.

In 2008 at the height of the mining construction boom, net overseas migration into WA peaked at 48,236 people according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics due to shortfalls in the State’s skilled workforce. Now there is a growing need to reskill workers as demand shifts away from resources. The VET sector will play a critical role, but how will the recent reforms improve or hinder their capabilities?

It is also important to accurately predict which industries will require specialised skills in the future, as emerging technologies threaten to make many current occupations and industries obsolete as outlined in CEDA’s 2015 report, Australia’s future workforce?

Developing an education strategy that develops an internationally competitive, adaptable workforce is critical. How will WA meet this challenge to strengthen the State’s workforce and economy?
