Event overview

Advances in medicine over the past 100 years have transformed human life expectancy and the management of illness. Australia has played an outsized role in this transformation with individuals having been at the forefront of disease eradication and the advances in medical technology.

Ongoing developments in healthcare are profoundly changing the healthcare landscape. While advances in medicine are significantly improving the capacity to improve health outcomes they are also challenging traditional funding mechanisms. These changes are creating substantive opportunities and challenges.

Appropriate policy settings will enable Australia to build on its strengths and enhance the health of its people while encouraging the ongoing development of strong and sustainable high value economic activities in healthcare. It is important to have effective policy settings that enable dynamic efficiency improvements in the delivery of healthcare while maximising the economic opportunities possible from the rapid rate of medical advances.

The next report on CEDA's Research and policy agenda will focus on Australia as a leader in health innovation and development. Titled Healthcare: Reform or ration, it will seek to leverage CEDA's close relationships with thought leaders in the health and policy sectors, identifying what policy settings have enabled an innovative biomedicine industry to emerge and what reforms could enhance it further.

In particular the report, which brings together a range of industry leaders and commentators as both project advisors and contributors, will examine the reasons behind the success of Australia's biomedicine sector, and the issues which need to be addressed across financing, policy and education to maintain our leading role within the sector as well as building resilience into the health sector as a whole.

All attendees at this event will receive a copy of the report.
