OVERVIEW

Australia is entering an uncharted economic environment, with an ageing population and a booming resources sector creating a unique crunch on the labour market. The mining sector will divert human capital and reshape the economy just as more people than ever begin to enter retirement. So where does this leave us?

The challenge has been recognised at the highest level, with the Prime Minister herself putting the skills debate back on the agenda and there is widespread acknowledgement that Australia needs to engage all parts of society in our economic prosperity through improving labour market productivity and participation.

The recent federal budget placed front and centre efforts to boost the supply of skilled labour through a variety of mechanisms designed to reform and enhance 'human capital' - the skills, health, productivity and participation of the nation's human resources. At the first event in this series, Skilled Group Chief, Mick McMahon, and State Minister for Higher Education and Skills, Peter Hall, will provide a high-level overview of the industry response to the skills crisis and the Victorian Government's perspective on how the State is adapting to, and planning for, the crunch on skills.
