With Australia having not had a Federal Government budget surplus since the global financial crisis, CEDA has called together leading thinkers to consider the long term implications for our national economy and prosperity and the complex process of budget repair.

CEDA’s first research report for 2016 Deficit to balance: budget repair options will provide situation analysis and policy recommendations for bringing the budget into balance and maintaining balance for years ahead.

Join senior leaders from across sectors and professions to hear this private and public sector panel discuss the criticality of repairing the federal budget and the policy and leadership the task will require.

Meet the speakers

Dr John Edwards
Board Member, CEDA and Reserve Bank of Australia

John Edwards is an economist who has previously served as Executive Director for Economic Planning and Development for the Kingdom of Bahrain; and was for twelve years Chief Economist for Australia and New Zealand for the global financial group, HSBC. He has published four books on topics of economic development and policy analysis. 

John Nesbitt
Chief Executive Officer, Suncorp Banking and Wealth, Suncorp Group

Prior to his work at Suncorp John Nesbitt was Group Executive for Private Wealth and Group CFO, Perpetual Limited. He also held executive roles at Lend Lease Group, MLC Limited and PWC. John has worked in Australia, the UK and the USA.

Helen Silver AO
Chief General Manager Workers’ Compensation Division, Allianz Australia

Helen Silver has worked with the Productivity Commission, National Australia Bank, Victorian and Commonwealth public service. She led negotiations on health, water, transport and taxation reform, NDIS and the Gonski Review and was a member of the COAG Reform Council.

Pauline Vamos
Chief Executive Officer, The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia

Pauline Vamos has over 20 years' experience in financial services.  She has worked as regulator, corporate counsel, head of compliance, a strategic risk consultant and trustee director. Pauline is a qualified lawyer and an advisor to the Australian Taxation Office.

Professor Roy Green
Chair, Queensland Competition Authority

Professor Green has worked with the OECD and European Commission and led Federal government industry reviews and national innovation initiatives. Roy holds a University of Cambridge PhD in Economics and was a contributor to CEDA’s major research Australia’s Future Workforce.
