Meet the speaker

The Hon. Paul Keating
Former Prime Minister of Australia

As Prime Minister of Australia from 1991 to 1996 and Treasurer from 1983 to 1991, Paul Keating’s social and economic reforms include compulsory superannuation (now at more than $2.3trillion under management), financial sector deregulation, floating the Australian dollar, forging Australia’s place in Asia, establishing the APEC leaders’ meeting, and reforms in education, training, labour market and the arts. He worked towards an inclusive social policy, arguing the case for Australia to become a Republic and establishing the Native Title legislation.

His published work includes Engagement: Australian faces the Asia Pacific in 2000 and After Words, a book of post-prime ministerial speeches in 2011. Keating, the book based on a four-part ABC interview series with Kerry O’Brien, was published in 2015 as was Troy Bramston’s Paul Keating: The Big-Picture Leader in 2016. He is the progenitor of Sydney Harbour’s Barangaroo Headland Park and contributes occasionally on the economy, foreign affairs, architecture and urban design.
