Former Wesfarmers CEO Michael Chaney, one of Australia's most admired business leaders, has joined CEDA's Board of Governors.
Mr Chaney said CEDA had played a central role since its foundation in fostering analysis and debate of political, economic and business issues of critical importance to Australia.
"In an age of the '30-second grab' on television and a superficiality of analysis generally, CEDA makes a huge contribution to our society," he said.
CEDA CEO David Edwards welcomed Mr Chaney to the Board of Governors.
"Michael's outstanding achievements as a business leader and his recent record of contribution to public policy debate will make him a valuable addition to the Board of Governors," Mr Edwards said.
Mr Chaney retired this week as CEO of Wesfarmers, one of Australia's top ten companies. He has been CEO and managing director of Wesfarmers since 1992, following extensive experience in the finance and petroleum industries.
CEDA's Board of Governors provides advice on CEDA's long-term public policy priorities, and includes eminent Australians from business, universities and government. The Board of Governors meets twice a year with CEDA national president Ivan Deveson, national patron Maurice Newman and CEO David Edwards. (A separate CEDA board of directors provides conventional board oversight of CEDA's management.)
In recent years the Board of Governors has focused on significant national issues including water reform, innovation and the ageing population. High on the agenda at its last meeting was the challenge of more productive Commonwealth-State relationships.
