Mr Ivan Deveson announced today the appointment of Geoff Allen as the new Chairman of CEDA (the Committee for Economic Development of Australia).
"On behalf of the Board, I am delighted to announce Geoff Allen as my successor," Mr Deveson, the current Chairman of CEDA, said.
"Geoff brings over 30 years of involvement in public policy issues at the highest level both here and abroad," he said.
Between 1983 and 1988 Mr Allen was the Co-founder and Foundation Executive Director of the Business Council of Australia, designing the structure and modus operandi of that body. In 1988 he founded the major public policy consultancy, the Allen Consulting Group, and the Centre for Corporate Public Affairs.
As a management consultant Mr Allen has advised on public policy, issues management and organisation structures and strategies in projects for senior levels of government, CEOs of major Australian organisations, numerous national industry associations and the senior management of many other leading companies and government agencies.
Over the past ten years Mr Allen has chaired the Australian Government's Trade Policy Advisory Councils and is currently Chairman of the Australian Statistics Advisory Council. He is Chairman of the Centre for Corporate Public Affairs, Deputy Chairman of the Melbourne Business School and Board member of the Victorian College of the Arts, the Centre for Social Impact and the European Centre for Public Affairs.
CEDA has a strong track record over nearly 50 years in influencing public policy debate in Australia through independent research and public forums.
Mr Deveson said the global economic and political environment was in a challenging phase.
"Getting the right settings for our national public policy direction has never been more crucial. I am confident Geoff will lead CEDA to a new level of engagement in the debate on public policy issues of national significance," he said.
Mr Allen commented that he had always had a great respect for CEDA's contribution to thought leadership in economic and social policy in Australia.
"I look forward to working with leading thinkers on our big issues, to maintain and enhance the contribution CEDA makes to our economic development and community well being."
Geoff Allen will officially take up his appointment as Chairman following CEDA's next Annual General Meeting in Melbourne on 19 November 2008.
